THE EVENT

Farnborough Hill School’s 125th Anniversary Winter Ball – seated dinner for 200.

THE CHALLENGE

The event was to take place in their recently built school sports hall. This presented a number of issues including tight access, weight loading need to be spread in order to protect the flooring and a large build in tight space conditions. The client also requested internal dressing of the main reception entrance to the sports hall and corridors to the loo area.

THE SOLUTION

A 12m x 27m main structure, a walkway reception area and a 6m x 12m catering facility. Internally we supplied hardwood flooring, carpet, dancefloor, furniture, staging forliveband and all associated power requirements. The lighting was a mix of chandeliers,uplightersand black starlight roof linings. Theschoolscolours of lilac and green were also suppliedforthe dressing of the marquee.

THE EVENT

Food with A View’ and Marvellous Mole Valley (Surrey) Celebrations.

THE CHALLENGE

To provide a marquee structure and services on Donkey Green atop of Box Hill, a National Trust area and one of scientific interest.

THE SOLUTION

A 9x18m (30x60ft) clearspan frame marquee for visitors and exhibitors, with staging for presentations and for the Chairman of Mole Valley to address the visitors. In addition we supplied a mixture of furniture, in the way of 6ft long trestle tables, 5ft round tables and 4ft round tables with chairs for visitors to sit at. We also provided a luxury loo unit adjacent to the marquee.

To ensure that impact on the ground was limited to the nature of the space, we used our track way to protect the ground, in addition we used two of our land rovers and trailers to transport the equipment to avoid using heavy Lorries.

Our company decided to do something different for employees for their Christmas party. DIY Marquees your one stop marquee shop

DIY marquees for sale are offering some new products for 2014. This includes a new range of commercial heavy duty pop-up style marquees from 3x3m up to 4x8m available with or without internal decorative linings. We are also going to be offering a range of peaked roof pagoda style marquees from spring 2014 onwards; these use the same heavy duty framework as our existing ranges but feature a peaked roof for a greater wow factor at functions.

How to erect a marquee on hard standing?

The easiest way to erect a marquee is on grass using a tie down kit to hold it in place but sometimes a marquee has to go up on hard surfaces. With our DIY Marquees (and indeed most quality marquees) this isn’t a problem as long as you fit groundbars. Groundbars don’t hold the marquee down but they do make it more rigid – imagine the marquee as a box, securing the bottom line makes it a much stronger and more rigid box.

When erecting a marquee on hard standing:

Look around the site, if the marquee is to be erected on a patio often there are flower beds or other soft surfaces to gain anchoring points from and just use longer tie downs.

Assuming there is no existing anchoring point the remaining options are heavy weights or drilling in to the ground.

Drilling is usually only an option on car parks or old tennis courts (be sure to fill the holes afterwards with an appropriate filler).

Concrete blocks or sand bags can be used as weights but my preference is water butts. These are light to carry round but you only fill them up once they are strapped to the marquee (this does rely on having a hosepipe on site).

When using weights strap them directly to the marquee, having them a distance away just gives the weight room to drag slightly and then it’s lost most of its use.

Heavy duty durable quality marquees

Thank you to everyone who visited us at The Showmans Show last week. For those that didn’t make it we displayed one of our new pop-up marquee for sale including linings, we also had a new pagoda style marquee that will be a standard stock item next year. We’re confident both will prove popular and really add something to the marquee hire industry.

The Show itself was again very quiet, personally I think a change to Fri/Sat would really help increase visitors. As an erector of smaller marquees it is always a joy to see what can be achieved in larger structures, some of the two story marquees are very very impressive. Saying that I wouldn’t like to put them up!
